Music Education – True Science

Advocate for Music Education

When will we realize that Music should be viewed as a science and implemented in the school cirriculum just like any other discipline. The NCLB Act doesn’t acknowledge Music in any of it’s demands. Knowingly, school districts have turned the backs for a more suitable and affordable practice, part-time music instruction especially in urban settings. Why?

First of all, a productive music program requires adequate funding because instruments are involved. Biology requires the use of a micro-scope and Music requires usage of musical instruments, they’re essential to the instruction.  I know, your tired of hearing this, but Music incorporates every other discipline of study known to man, History, English, Math, Science  and yes  gym too.  School leaders who fail to acknowledge music’s benefit, miss the opportunity to effectively increase learning and build community involvement.   Secondly,we must remember that our students want to be a part of something meaniful.  Music is considered by students as “something that I don’t need to pass to graduate”.   If Music is not held to the same standards as other subjects, why would any student have interest in something that ’s deemed un-important.  Peer pressure is a monster in our school systems and we’re sending the wrong message.

Demand that music be consider as one of the sciences and subject requirement …and sit back and watch student participation and achievement increase.
